Ian Kinrade
Sunday 11th September 2005

It is with great shock and sadness that I must report the sudden death of Ian 'Singing' Kinrade. One of Taplow Cricket Club's most remarkable of players. He collapsed and died perhaps at a time he would have most appreciated - in his whites, waiting to bat having taken another three wickets earlier in the day at Ten Acres.

The Singing Detective loved cricket and why ever not? He was extremely knowledgeable about the game and a tremendously prolific wicket taker. He started playing regularly for Taplow in 1989 and in those days demonstrated control and variety even Shane Warne would have been proud of. I was a teenager in the 1st XI at the time and I still remember, as a fielder, hoping the captain would hurry up and take an opening bowler off so I could start the enjoyable part of the day - watching some very good and utterly bamboozled batsman get stumped by my brother as they tried to work out which way the ball was going to turn! Our fixture list was full of top sides with talented batsman and Singing would delight in working out ways to get them out, something he managed to do with awesome regularity. In 1990 he managed to take 5 wickets in 10 separate matches, an extraordinary achievement by someone who played only once a week.

During much of the nineties he was 1st XI captain on Sundays during which time he was the key part of a strong side. He managed his team extremely effectively as we entered something of a golden age at the Club. He brought together some of the best players seen at Taplow for many years and because of the way he liked to play the game and the great respect he engendered in them he kept them all keen, interested and very happy. Who can forget his end of year Captain's report for 1993, four pages of A4 written entirely in rhyme!

Later on he became captain of the Sunday second XI bringing on many new young players whilst continuing his astonishing rate of wicket taking. At the end of his days he was still getting hatfuls of wickets by taking the pace off the ball and getting the batsman to chip it up in the air. The act of dismissing incompetent batsman is surprisingly difficult, as good bowlers who have played the game will testify; in his final years Singing will probably always be remembered as the greatest bowler against non-batsman ever to have played this great game at Taplow!

'The Great Man' took over 50 wickets in 11 of the 17 seasons he was with us and he was well on course to making this 2005 season his most successful since that remarkable effort in 1990. In all he took 5 wickets on an amazing 51 occasions, he took over 850 wickets - one every four-and-a-half overs! He would come up to nets every Tuesday and bowl on until dark against anyone who was prepared to face him - many will claim that Ian was in fact the world's greatest net bowler. Few will argue. He was a fabulous tourist, a walking anecdote waiting to happen. He loved cricket and we all loved him. To shuffle off to that perfect spinning track in the sky the day before England won back the Ashes seems cruel, I for one will have a drink to his memory whenever we play the Old Enemy in future.

This man who introduced the 'Brockenhurst Ball' to the game which was so devastating the ICC had to introduce a law change to ban it; this man who could explain the art of bowling to a complete non-cricketer by way of wrapping his fingers around a Swan Vesta matchbox and bowling it onto a table; this man who could produce risotto at will in an effort to see just how tight our Aussie overseas player really was when it came to playing 'The Boot'; this man will be sorely missed.

Our thoughts right now are with his family at this saddest of times. We will all miss you, Singing. Non-batsmen throughout the world can now look forward to a distinct improvement in their averages!

Hon. Secretary

John Midlane
Thursday 18th July 2002

It is with the greatest of sadness that I must report the passing away of John Midlane, President of Taplow Cricket Club. He died peacefully in his sleep last night after a short illness.

His links with the Club date back to 1974 and in his playing days at Taplow batted on 500 occasions scoring nearly 7000 runs. He became President in 1988 and remained a vital figure in everything associated with the Club both on and off the field. So many events at the Club and improvements to the facilities would not have been possible in recent times without John and Iris and it is with Iris and the rest of the family that our thoughts are with at this difficult time.

John was a supremely generous man, a superstar. He will always be fondly remembered by the members at Ten Acres and by all those who were fortunate enough to have met him.
