Welcome to colts, old and new, and their parents.
We anticipate the following numbers, approximately, of colts in each cricket age year for the coming season. The cricket and school year ages are defined in exactly the same way (ie the age on the preceding 31 August) such that the cricket age is four years more than the school year. If you are not intending to play this season then let the club know as soon as possible.
| Cricket Age | School Year | Number of colts |
|---|---|---|
| 16 | 12 | 12 |
| 15 | 11 | 3 |
| 14 | 10 | 13 |
| 13 | 9 | 0 |
| 12 | 8 | 12 |
| 11 | 7 | 3 |
| 10 | 6 | 7 |
| 9 | 5 | 7 |
| 8 | 4 | 6 |
| 7 | 3 | 7 |
We have entered the Bucks Cricket Board competitions for Under 17, Under 15, Under 13 and Under 11 teams. The teams for the U17 matches will be chosen from 16 and 15 yr-olds, for U15 matches from 14 and 13 yr-olds, for U13 matches from 12 and 11 yr-olds and for U11 matches from 10 and 9 yr-olds. Occasionally we will need to ask colts to play for an older age group team if we are short of colts of the preferred age. This will be done with consideration for the colt's safety, ability and confidence.
Note that for competition matches all colts must be "paid-up", or at least bona-fide members of our club and colts must not be older than the permitted age. These rules are applied rigorously by the competition organisers and breaking them results in the team involved being disqualified from the competition. The U11s play "Barrington Rules" matches (10-a-side teams, 20 overs, batting in pairs) and the older colts play 11-a-side, 20 over matches. All four age groups are in both league and KO competitions. Usually there will be a match for each age group each week.
The managers will co-ordinate with parents to establish procedures (such as times, transport, uncertain weather and notifying players) for matches.
A fixture list will be sent out separately.

Coaching for the U15 colts and younger, will be on Friday evenings 6.15pm to 7.45pm. For the U17 yr-olds coaching will be on Tuesday evenings with the adults. With about 30 matches scheduled some will have to be played on Friday evenings so that some coaching will have to sacrificed. Please arrive at least 5 minutes before the scheduled start of coaching and wear a white top, jogging bottoms and trainers (or something that can be easily washed!). Coaching will start on Friday April 22nd and continue until about the end of the school term. Depending on the number of managers, coaches and colts available some cricket may continue into the summer holidays. If the weather looks threatening on Fridays ring your manager to avoid wasted journeys.
The club will endeavour to carry out the recommendations of the England and Bucks Cricket Boards in respect of "Welfare of Young People in Cricket".
We welcome enquiries from potential new players (including girls) but do not tell parents to bring them to Taplow on Friday evenings or when we have matches. Ask them to contact the appropriate team manager first who can initially give them a copy of this newsletter for information.
The annual subscription remains at £20 this season. The charge for the indoor nets is £3 per hour and will be collected with the subscription. We ask that subscriptions are paid promptly at the beginning of the season.
Bats, pads, gloves and balls are supplied by the club for practice and matches. However because of the larger numbers of colts and matches this season we ask for donations of unwanted kit (ie not intended to be handed down to younger children). If boys bring their own kit to matches or practice make sure that it is clearly marked with their names. It is important that boys wear an abdominal protector when batting against a hard ball. These inexpensive items can be bought at sports shops.
Technically under club rules parents and other adults can use the facilities (including the bar) and attend events at Taplow only if they are signed in by a member. This situation can be avoided by becoming a social member - £10 for an individual or family. Please contact Iris Midlane (telephone: 01628 629455) for details.
We are fortunate that nearly all the colts and parents are on the internet so that emailing is a convenient way for information to be sent out, particularly for items of general interest, or concerning cancellation or changes of matches. Let me know if the address which was used to send you this email is not the most suitable. Please check your emails regularly for cricket messages. There are also an additional website of interest - www.buckscb.play-cricket.com. The Bucks CB website carries colts league details.
It is hoped to organise indoor nets for 9 yr-olds to 14 yr-olds inclusive. Managers will contact colts about arrangements for indoor net practices.
Last season some parents expressed an interest in learning how to score for colt's cricket matches to become more involved in the games. If you are interested contact me at the email address below.
